My Device History...

Over the years I have been using Pocket PC's starting form my first iPaq rz1710 (rz1710 Review), it was a very nice little device, great for me to start with.

Then came the Harrier (for those in the USA - PPC-6600) came along with Telecom, which I bought I liked this phone / PPC because of the portrait slide out keyboard which was great for texting, it ran WM 2003.

After WM5 was released I was interested in the Apache (PPC-6700), I had seen on the website that the Apache had 64MB RAM and 128MB flash ROM, to my surprise it had less memory (RAM)  than my Harrier, I went to my local Telecom store to enquire about the device, I asked them why it had less memory, their reply was less than inspiring... They knew NOTHING.

In the ending I had to go onto the Sprint website to find out that WM5 had a NEW memory management system that it used ROM rather than RAM to store programmes and that it used RAM to run the apps... You would think that a Telco would have staff trained and know what they are selling.

In the end I did buy it, I loved the compact size compared to the Harrier, the areal was a pain but got over that in a hurry, the slide out keyboard was so much better than the Harrier's and I just loved. Now here is the reason I sold it and said I would NEVER EVER would go back to a PPC / Phone device...

The ringing time! My wife would ring me and she would have 6 rings to my 1 ring, I did a registry hack and got it down to 4 rings to 1 ring, I just kept on missing calls and my wife couldn't get a hold of me, so went back to a standard mobile phone.

I didn't give up on PPC totally,  I then bought my Dell Axim X51v (Axim X51v Review) which I loved, it was powerful and robust for what I need it for, Dairy, eBooks, Word Docs, Surfing the net on our Wi-Fi network at home.

Since the release of the iPhone (1st Gen) and then the iPod Touch, being a techno Geek I had to have an iPod Touch as I saw this as more than an iPod it was a Music Player, Contacts, Calendar, Wi-Fi, Internet and now much more with the release of the App Store, love this iPod and would recommend it over the Classic or the Nano also prices are coming down.

I have just bought a Smartphone a Motorola Q9h, now don't go and say but you stated you would NEVER EVER go back to a PPC / Phone, but the Q9h is a Smartphone, for those that have been mislead by Microsoft who coined every WM device with a phone a "Smartphone", they are not there are PPC Phones (Harrier, Apache) which have a "Touch Screen" and a Smartphone (Moto Q9h, Dash) which have a NON-Touch Screen and use the directional D-Pad to move through the screen.

Now the Moto Q9h (Vodafone - Yes I have moved) is very fast on picking up the call with in 1 to 1 1/2 rings, I found that the Qwerty Keyboard is a dream, even better than the Apache's which I thought was the best out at that stage. Even though there is a smaller amount of Apps for Smartphone’s compared to Pocket PC devices it is getting better as more and more companies are porting their main stay apps across to the Smartphone platform.

Well that is my intro to my PPC / Smartphone devices...

Hear from me soon

Yesterday I purchased a Sony CyberShot DSC-W110 from Harvey Norman, I also had the option to buy a bag and spare battery for only $20! Here are a few photos of what I got..

The Boxes

Everything Unpacked

Camera Front and Back

Ok.. All of these photos were taken by another Sony camera (not the same model as this though) apart from the boxes one which I took with the DSC-W110.

Before walking into Harvey Norman yesterday I knew next to nothing about cameras, I knew how to take photos and that was pretty much it.. So I wanted someone to explain to me different features cameras have like, 3x zoom and 4x zoom - will I notice the difference, if 7.2 mega pixels is any better than 8 mega pixels for all round use and a few other things. What I really wanted to know if I could take photos that would focus on a certain object and make the background blurry, the girl who served me didn't exactly know how to but said they all can do this, I took her word for it. Too be perfectly honest she was absolutely no help to me, she may as well of given me the cabinet keys and let me play with them all (which I did anyway).

I decided on the DSC-W110 because;

A) I like Sony products, Ive used Sony cameras before.
B) I got a bag and battery for $20.
C) This camera didn't feel 'plasticy' like some of the others.
D) All my gadgets are black hence I chose a black camera.

So far I really like this camera and am anxious to explore some of its other features, other than the Auto mode!

I havn't really had a chance to take any decent photos yet but when I do, Ill post a follow up to this blog entry.

If you live in Maungaraki (a hillside suburb in Lower Hutt) you'll realise that in many parts cellular coverage is terrible. This is because neither Vodafone or Telecom believe there is a need for sites and instead rely on coverage from other sites in the Hutt Valley basin below or in Vodafone's case coverage from a site on Mt Crowther in Wainuiomata.

Good news is on the way however, NZ Communications have applied to the Lower Hutt City Council for permission to put a cellsite at the top of Honeysuckle Grove (near the water tower) which would deliver great coverage. I'm not sure if this will be a standalone mast or panels mounted on the existing water tower which already houses radio gear for several organisations including Smartlinx3 who have equipment for their wireless broadband product.

If NZ Comms can do this why can't Vodafone or Telecom?

< Previous Cardboard idea

After my previous cardboard idea (which you can view in the link above), here is another:

My laptop needs to be slightly elevated to cool it down, so here is a laptop cooler (unfortunately, not strong enough to be made into a stand)

It even runs on USB power! All I need to plug it into a spare USB port. I stripped this USB plug form the masses of USB extenders that Dick Smith ship with their flash drives (that's that black USB plug)

The fan came from some old PCs, some of which come with the 8cm fans, though it runs at a lesser power as USB right now supplies 5v, the fans run at a nominal voltage of 12v. But they work... to an extent.

Now to make it fire proof...

The saga of the Mobile Me debacle continues.

Now over 7 days since my wife had access to her mail. I would imagine that Apple could have totally replaced any servers affected many times over within seven days. The average corporate IT dept can fix things in 24 hrs - I am sure the problem is bigger, but then so are the resources Apple has available to deploy!

Worst of all is the fact that there just seems to be no comment coming from Apple about the nature of the issue and when they expect to have things up and running.

On top of that it has still barely stopped raining....!

We did go and see Dark Knight today. IMHO one of the better Batman films to date. The late Heath Ledger is, I think, an excellent Joker - a memorable Swansong performance from an actor who had much potential. If you like that kind of thing, it's a great film with lots of action. We are in danger of trying to explore 'the reason why' a bit too much though - Batman is because Batman is! We need not be troubled with his navel gazing when we have so many of our own issues to resolve, I feel.

Well, have a good weekend, Dear Reader!
