Vodem stick officially appears online on Vodafone

Vodem stick officially appears online on Vodafone
You can finally find it - the Vodafone Vodem Stick is here.

With 7.2mbps HSDPA (where available) and 900MHz 3G coverage support included, it's a miniature device but more advanced than the Vodem.

Pricing for it seems to vary across pages though:

Finally: Persistent storage for Amazon EC2
Amazon has finally announced the general availability of persistent storage for EC2! This is long awaited news. Here is a also a writeup from Werner Vogels, the Amazon CTO.

Some background...

My iPod repair experience: The finale
The blog title is slightly wrong, but I'll get to that in a sec.

After a week waiting for my iPod touch to be repaired - it finally got back.

When I looked at the description of the repair from the report:

On 11/8/2008 From 3:00 To 3:30 At the None Rate, for a total of $0.00 Worked On by ipod.
Confirmed fault found.
Ipod not working.
Replace under warranty.

So a brand new iPod touch now lands at my place - 1.1.4 preinstalled (2.0 Software Update will not be provided on new iPod touches, so for people buying new ones now, you are going to be on the same level as everybody else)

Good thing as I hadn't had a case for it for 3 months and the back was heavily scratched during that period (damn the soft chrome backing)

I do notice that the screen is now significantly brighter - really really bright - to the point I thought that the picture would wash out.

But it has been really worth the wait - now that I got a factory fresh, OEM-like packaged iPod touch (gotta love the packaging)

Here are some photos of the unpacking:

Pretty neat packing there by Renaissance.

Even comes with a factory barcode!

Mmm... fresh packaging smell.

Right now, I'm upgrading my iPod to 2.0.1 and probably restore my old backup, and get things back to normal again (no iPod = no wireless life - why did my laptop have to fail?)

Star Crush: A Nerd's Hope
You have to admit, nerds can be an optimistic bunch. Take, for example a recent case I have come across: A nice but otherwise unassuming IT support guy, burried away deep in the bowels of some anonymous IT department, rarely seeing the light of day a... (more in the full post)

Google Street View car in Wellington
I was told today the Google Street View car is going around Wellington. here are some pictures, taken on the move, showing the camera on top of the car, and a couple of side shots showing the Google logo:

Thanks to Evan for sending in the pictures!

Twitula update - now with hashtag and word search
I wasn't planning on doing more work on Twitula this soon (there are other more interesting things to work on in .NET land these days), but with Tech Ed '08 coming up soon I thought it would be handy to be able to filter tweets by the #tenz hashtag while I was there, and then since I was adding hashtags it wasn't much work to include word search as well.
As always, you can get it here.

If you have any problems just use the contact form and let me know.
(Clarification: You'll need to be more specific than "it doesn't work" Cool. Just thought I'd mention that).

Microsoft lost the plot on Media Center...
We waited so long for Microsoft Fiji, er, TV Pack - to find out it may only be released to OEM and don't event have the HD h.264 support.

Then a few months ago I posted here how the Apple iTunes movie store would kill the media center - when it was released to UK, France and Canada.

And now Apple has announced the Apple iTunes movies for Australia and New Zealand.

Yes, for the first time I am downloading iTunes as we speak. I am going to install in our media center in the lounge.

The iTunes Store in Australia and New Zealand feature over 700 films for rent or purchase, with new release titles available for purchase on the same day as their DVD release, including favorites such as “National Treasure 2,” “Jumper,” “27 Dresses,” “Cloverfield,” “Vantage Point” and “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End.”

iTunes movies in New Zealand start at NZ$9.99 for catalog title purchases, NZ$17.99 for recent releases and NZ$24.99 for new releases. iTunes Movie Rentals are NZ$4.99 for library title rentals and NZ$6.99 for new releases, and high definition versions are priced at just one dollar more. Movie rentals can be previewed, purchased and watched on iPod classic, iPod nano with video, iPod touch, iPhone and on a widescreen TV with Apple TV.

Enough said. Microsoft lost the battle in the consumer entertainment media space.

Now we just need those New Zealand ISPs to stop selling plans with 10 GB cap and offer real stuff - let's start with 200 GB?
