So, the widely anticipated new Dell Inspiron Mini 9 is finally available, as was reported everywhere today, even here on Geekzone. When you take a look at Dell's web-site where you can buy and configure your machine, you can see that a mode... (more in the full post)
A few months ago we entered into an agreement with Mobihand to power a new Geekzone Software Store, which came live a couple of weeks ago, under a new subdomain (store.geekzone.co.nz) - but it still can be accessed from the old www.geekzone.co.nz/store address.
Their platform offers a very complete range of mobile software for Windows Mobile Professional, Windows Mobile Standard, Symbian and Palm OS.
That worked quite well because their platform offers an incredible flexibility for me to configure campaigns, discounts, bundles, specials and most importantly to get reports out of the system - now I know exactly what is selling and what is interesting for users of all these mobile platforms.
We started with a 20% discount code that expired today. This code was well used, so I decided to create a new discount code - "Geekzone" - that will give buyers 15% discount in all products.
I've created a couple of best-seller modules and inserted in our Software page. There you can see all the best-seller software for each platform. Really cool information. Note that this page is only a selection - for the full catalogue you have to visit Geekzone Software Store.
And remember to use the discount codes.
I can really understand why there are more infections with malware on computers running Windows than those that run other OSs. Firstly, there are of course less people using those other OSs, thus the distributors of malware naturally... (more in the full post)

Freedom. 1998-1998?
Remember the first revolutionary "No Hooks" no credit expiry date plan and chunky "Refurbished" 025 Motorola that was sold via The Warehouse.
Lasted about a year and suddenly went belly up.
GOLD. 1999-2004
After the failure of Freedon, The Warehouse introduced GOLD which was a similar system of one everyday rate and no credit expiry.
GOLD mobiles had the billing changed from GOLD to Telecom and then were integrated into Telecom mobiles in about 2004 and the brand was withdrawn.
X-Cell. 1999-2005
Launched via Trustpower it later lived on being sold under Sky. Unicall, Reach
Became Reach mobile in is dying days and met the same demise as Reach wireless
Phones suddenly stopped working in 2005 just like their wireless network and still remained half-connected but with no billing platform.
Pulsate. 2001-2002
Devised by Telecom to make 025 "cool" and has sponsorships, DJ events and a really neat web portal for it's day. It also introduced the hack to SMS to 021 mobiles and a 1c texing promo after 9PM
Pulsate was a standard Telecom Prepaid device anyway and simply became "Boost"
Boost. 2002-2007
An international "youth brand" introduced by Telecom to replace the in-house Pulsate brand it offered a range of text plans but lacked the awesome website offered by it's predesessor, It became famous for sponsoring Hip-Hip and was an on-net plan (027-027) priced.
Was withdrawn for the market late 2007 but the SMS-on-net plan still exists and is avialable to all Telecom customers as "boostTXT"
Telstra. 1998-2007
Vodafone resold plans under 029 numbers and not a true MNVO.
It all fell apart in 2007 and they defected to Telecom late 2007, this "new network" is nothing new by the way.
Telstra 2007
The only current MNVO that actually holds service. Runs upon the existing CDMA network.
Nice plans too that offer great rates and no "free minute scams with overage penalties"
So far all MNVO's ahve been through Telecom.
Hopefully this new wave of the Virtual Operators can make a success.
Seven years today! It's not a day many people will forget. It stands out in my mind due to a member of my team being in New York while it happened. This was my experience:
I was a program manager for a telco/cable company in the UK. I had a team of project managers and engineers building a huge IP network throughout the UK, with PoPs in Europe and the US. On the 11th of September 2001, I was attending a PRINCE2 course (Projects in Controlled Environments) and it was really tough going. I was doing a practice exam and of course had my phone switched off. When I got out of the exam I had a voice mail from one of my project managers, sounding very concerned about Ziya. Ziya was a very talented and experienced IP engineer (the Sultan of Cisco he was known as), who we had sent to New York to build a data PoP in a Level3 facility, and hook it up to a peering point just across the road from the twin towers.
Matt (project manager) said that he had been talking to Ziya and there was some serious shit going down in New York - jet fighters swooping between buildings and the like. They were then cut off - we found out later that the cell phone network in New York had crashed (or been turned off - still not sure about that).
I went through to reception, where there was a big TV and saw what was going on - wow!!
We all tried repeatedly to get through to Ziya, directed to voicemail every time. We contacted Ziya's wife, but she had no news either.
I had a very anxious evening, unable to concentrate on my course work or anything else for that matter. You can imagine my releif when Ziya called me later that night.
He had been working at the Port Authority building (on 34th St I think) and realised that something was happening. When his phone went dead he thought "that's it! I'm out of here". He threw his tools into our cabinet in the colo, picked up his laptop and followed the throng of people heading off Manhattan Island. Not bothering with his gear in the hotel, he walked off the island (no trains were running and all the roads were full of people not vehicles) and found a bus station in Jersey. He bought a bus ticket for Chicago where he had some relatives, and a phone card. He called his wife and then me. Ziya said to me "you know Rob, I do look a bit like an Arab", being of Pakastani descent, yes he did, but it was not something I had ever considered before. Ziya later told me that that bus ride was one of the most scary and tense journeys he had ever taken - nobody spoke, everyone was glancing sideways.
We got Ziya back in the UK about a week later, and it was hugs and tears all round!
On a slightly lighter note, Ziya also had some issues on his further travels - riots in Moscow; Ziya was there for a job interview, plane crashes in Queens (New York again); Ziya and another engineer were in New York .
In the end, the running joke around the office was: find out where Ziya is going and go somewhere else!
I would be interested to hear of anyone elses experiences or tales from that tragedy.

The Geekzone forum thread on Chrome - some love, some hate and some serious paranoia!
By the way, this blog entry was posted from Chrome. How are you finding it? :)
Security Researchers have annouced the first flaw found in the much hyped Chrome browser from Google:
*** Update *** Flaw Demo included.
The issue exists in the way that Chrome behaves with undefined-handlers in chrome.dll version 0.2.149.27.
This crash can occur without any user interaction.
When a Malicious link is visited, that has a 'special' character after an undefined handler, The browser crashes, with a message "Whoa! Google Chrome has crashed. Restart Now?"
(source: http://evilfingers.com/advisory/google_chrome_poc.php , credit: Rishi Narang)
There is a demo of the working flaw at the source site.
Due to the Open source nature of the Chrome Browser, and the fact that its from such a prominent company I expect this flaw will be the first of many as coders and researchers alike tear it apart looking for flaws.
